On March 25th the University of Rhode Island Department of English will feature a talk by doctoral candidate Anna Brecke titled “Constructing Femininity: Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Material Culture and the OED.” The talk will address Braddon’s engagement with material culture and its lasting mark on the English language in the over 1,400 OED entries that cite her works, items held at the ICVWW Braddon Archive, and the way Braddon uses material culture words strategically in three of later novels Asphodel, Mount Royal, and Vixen. The talk is part of a Graduate Colloquium series co-sponsored by the English Department and the URI Center for the Humanities. All talks in this series are free and open to the public.
